Resumen
This essay presents three cases of Peruvian aristocrats who, in Colonial Mexico, claimed to have an advantageous Inca ancestry in order to attain or maintain privileges and caste-based positions. The author explores possible reasons behind their migration to New Spain as well as any social support they might have received from the missionaries. The paper also provides a theoretical reflection on both the articulation and circulation of similar identity constructs in trans-hemispheric Colonial America, and how this phenomenon contributed to the institutional materialization of the Spanish rule.
