"The crops postransplant role depends of getting quality seedlings, for which it requires intensive handling and environmental control. A little work has been done on passive control systems; from here the emphasis on the use of polyethylenes that modify the spectral balance and therefore the morphological and physiological seedlings response. Polyethylene covers modified with reflecting additives were used to endose greenhouse structures in order to examine the temperature regime and the development of tomato and sweet pepper seedlings. Two experimental films (CIQA-01 CIQA-02)
and a conventional polyethylene film were applied each in a 180 m2 greenhouse. Total and photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) was measured, external and internal temperatures of the greenhouse were quantified at tuvo heights. Seedling response was described by CO2 assimilation rate, stomatal resistance (RS), leaf area, stem diameter, plant height and dry weight. The films showed significative highly differences (p<0.01) in the photosynthetically active radiation and in the CO2 assimilation in tomato; however, the temperature in the first level only showed significancy (p<0.05). Average PAR transmittance inside the greenhouse were 59 percent, 56 percent and 42 percent for conventional film, CIQA-02, and CIQA-01, respectively. Also, the reflective experimental films CIQA-02 and CIQA-01 gave rise to reductions in 3 to 5 °C, in the temperature of the greenhouse in critical hours. On the other hand the highest rate of CO2 assimilation was showed by the seedlings under the conventional film. The experimental films CIQA-02 and CIQA-01 caused a 24 percent and 38 percent reduction in CO2 assimilation for tomato, and a 29 percent and 33 percent reduction for sweet pepper. As well RS did not show significant differences between the films neither between species, but was higher in the experimental CIQA films. Although finally the conventional film registered the highest values of radiation, temperature and CO2 assimilation, this was not reflected in greatest stem diameter, leaf area, and plant dry weight. in comparison to the experimental films. Considering the average of both species and both CIQA-02 and CIQA-01 films, these registered 19, 2.75, and 2.98 percent more leaf area, dry weight, and stem diameter, respectively. The seedling height in the experimental films was 5.1 percent less than the conventional film, which is favorable in seedling production."
