"An experiment was conducted to determine the performance of sheep fed corn stover treated with anhydrous ammonia (NH3) at there particle sizes. Digestibility coefficients of protein crude, ether extract, neutral detergent fiber (NDF), acid detergent fiber (ADF) and dry matter were also determined by a trial in vivo. The feeding period consisted of 56 days in wich 24 female sheeps were randnmlv ns5i-2nes to the cheminlly and mecanicallv trpnted
corn stover. The sheep received corn stover ad libitum plus .180 kg of a concentrate mixture for maintenance sheep were weighted at day cine and every 14 days there after corn stover intake, dry matter intake, weight gains and feed conversion were measured. The experimental design was completely at random with a factorial array and a multiple means comparison were used.
Corn stover intakes were 1.06 kg and 1.02 kg for animals receiving the non-ammoniated an the ammoniated corn stover. The results for the mechanical treatment being 1.12 kg, 0.870 kg and 1.14 kg for animals receiving grounded, minced and whole corn stover respectively. Dry matter intakes were 1.17 and 1.14 kg for day for animals receiving the non-ammoniated and the ammoniated corn stover, where as with respect to the sheep receiving forage grounded, minced and whole were 1.22, 0.954 and 1.28 kg. Statistical differences (P -5. 0.05) between treatmen ts in both variables were observed for mechanical
treatment.
Weight gains per day were 0.038 and 0.047 kg for animals receiving the non treated and the treated corn stover and 0.039, 0.046 and 0.043 kg for animals receiving forage grounded, minced and whole respecitvely. No signifi-
cant differences (P0.05) were observed due to the aboye
mentioned factors.
Feed conversion were 30.98 and 24.73 for animals receiving the non-ammoniated and the ammoniated corn stover, where as with respect to the animals receiving forage grounded, minced and whole were 32.14, 21.57 and 29.80 respectively.
Regarding the in vivo digestibility of the nutrients evaluated, the percentages obtained for crude protein were 54.45 per cent for the forage without treatment and 64.79 per cent for the ammoniated one; and 55.63 per cent, 59.77 per cent and 63.47 per cent for the stover when grounded, minced and whole. The percentages for the ether extract digestibility were 43.53 per cent and 68.18 per cent for the chemical treatment; and 50.01 per cent, 61.86 per cent and 52.69 considering the mecanical treatment, statistical differences (P 0.05) in the variable ether extract were for the chemical treatment. Regarding the fraction of NDF, the percentages in the chemical treatment were 65.63 and 74.23 per cent where as by particle size they were 65.74, 73.61 and 70.47 per cent with statistical differences (P 0.05) being found. ADF the values for were 63.97 per cent
for the non treated stover and ammoniated one; and 62.27, 72.54 and dering the mechanical treatment. The 65.26 per cent for the corn stover
cent for the 68.74 per cent consi-values for IVDMD were without treatment and
70.37 per cent for the ammoniated one; by size f particle they were 59.03 per cent for the grunded stover, 76.63 per cent for the minced stover and 67.80 per cent for the
whole unes, statistical differences being f❑und (P0.05)
in the variable DM of the mechanical treatment.
In the variance analysis was not found significative (P k 0.05) in nona variable for the interaction of the two factors studied (chemical and mechanical)."
