"The objectives of the present investigation were to estimate the genetic variation for different agronomic characters and heritability in two populations of maize; to estimate the effects of general combining ability (GCA) of parents and specific (SCA) of their crosses.
Double crosses obtained from two populations, one dwarf and the other early, according to the mating design I of North Carolina were evaluated in three environments. Also, single crosses were evaluated in two environments by the design II
of North Carolina, as well as the total census of the populations using a diallelic design, for both populations. The full-sib families and paternal and maternal half-sib families were planted at random in block designs with two repetitions. Five agronomic characters were measured: days to male and female fiowering, plant height, ear height and grain yield.
The genetic variance components and heritability estimates from different agronomic characters, showed that the early population contains a high proportion ol additive variance in most of the traits evaluated, which can be capitalized by recurren selection to accumulate additive effects present in the population. The opposite occurred in the dwarf population, where the dominante variance was high on plant height, ear height and yield; therefore it would be justified a hybridization program that exploits the non-additive effects of these traits.
From the diallel evaluation, lines having positive effects of GCA for grain yield. were identified and some of them presented good agronomic attributes, of which the L6. L12, L5 and L13, stand out from the dwarf population, whereas the L5, L7, L3, L6 anc Ll stand out from the early population.
Crosses with the best SCA from the dwarf population were 3x13, 4x5, 6x13 6x10, 4x9, 8x9, and 7x10, whereas 2x3, 8x10, 1x6, 4x7 and 1x5 from the earl) population"
