"The Mexican Corn Institute anually carries out evaluations to discriminate lines, select testers and identify hybrids, as well as the exploration of strategies that can help the breeding to get a better selection response. In this study 282 crosses were evaluated in three different subtropical environments with the following objectives: i) Explore the interaction of testers with lines to locate the lines under study in heterotic groups; ii) visualize natural tendencies of grouping among the agronomic variables to build a selection index; iii) Line selection helped by a selection index built with effects of GCA and hybrids with basis on the value stability of a selection index with phenotypic values; iv) selection of testers as progenitors and line discrimination; and v) compare Elston’s selection index with Barreto’s one. The procedure to identify heterotic groups was through AMMI line by tester model with basis on effects of SCA on graind yield, and to detect the variable grouping the AMMI hybrid by variable model was used with phenotypic values; the construction of the selection indexes was including the representative variables detected by the AMMI model. For the selection of the testers as progenitors the criteria of the favorable average per variable was taken in contrast for its discriminatory capability the value of the mean square and GCA effects for testers and to compare the methodologies of selection indexes, Pearson’s correlation was used. The results showed that the use of the AMMI model to identify the heterotic groups allowed the detection of two groups of testers and two contrasting testers P1 and P3; and the use of this model in the study of associated variables made possible to detect three groups of variables where a representative variable was chosen for each group: days to female blooming for the first group, plant rating for the second and yield for the third one. The use of selection indexes allowed the election of twelve lines and their consistent affiliation with basis on values of SCA among the identified heterotic groups. The use of the SREG model in the selection of hybrids allowed us to detect two mega-environments and the best hybrids for each on and the use of the average virtual environment of the SREG model allowed us to identify the H86, H125 and H266 hybrids as stables and with a favorable selection index. The exploration of the testers behavior detected as potential progenitors the P2 and P6 testers and the P1 tester was the one that has the major discrimination power. The results of the selection indexes comparison built with the representative variables, using Barreto and Elston’s methodologies showed similar arrangements and a correlation of (0.95)"
