Background: Overweight and obesity can be defined as an abnormal or excessive accumulation of fat that can be detrimental to health. The etiology is multifactorial and it is considered a chronic disease that represents a challenge for clinical management. There are currently no nutritional studies in rural populations of the district of Tandil.
Objectives: To determinate the prevalence of overweight and obesity, eating habits and physical activity level in adolescents attending secondary level of rural schools in the district of Tandil.
Methods: An observational and analytic study was designed. 100 students attending secondary level of rural schools were evaluated. Anthropometric measurements, body weight, height and mid upper arm circumference (MUAC) were taken. Body mass index (BMI) was calculated and the prevalence of overweight and obesity was determined according to the BMI/Age Z score.
The level of variability of the diet, the screen time, and the level of physical activity were evaluated by means of a survey.
Results: The median age of the participants was 14,75 years. The prevalence of overweight and obesity was 37%. 74% of those surveyed do not comply with the exercise recommended by the WHO. A significant difference was found in the time of physical activity between the overweight group (38.5 min/day) (27,3; 41,9) and the normal weight group (48.6 min/day) (34,3; 67,7) (p=0,017). The diet presented an "intermediate" diversity on average. Both groups reported consuming meats (88%), dairy products (74%), and eggs (56%). None of the respondents stated that they consumed fish. Although 70% reported consuming fruits and vegetables, there was low diversity in this food group. 74% of respondents do not comply with the recommendation of less than 2 hours/day of screen time. No significant differences are observed in relation to the consumption of screens between the normal weight group and the excess weight group (p=0,179).
Conclusions: A high prevalence of overweight and obesity, sedentary lifestyle and excessive screen time was found in the population of this study. Although the diet has an intermediate variability with high consumption of meat, dairy and eggs, it presents low diversity of fruits and vegetables. It is crucial to promote strategies for prevention and management of body weight in the adolescent population of rural areas of Tandil. Facultad de Ciencias Médicas
