The objective of this essay is to relate the history of the signatura of Christopher Columbus, with the Modern Age and the discovery of America in 1492. Modernity understood in terms: philosophical, aesthetic and artistic cultural linked to the European intellectual enlightenment that culminated in the revolutions bourgeois. With a hermeneutic methodology (based on the semiology of Art), we work on the following hypothesis: the Holy Trinity Christian, as a manifestation of God in the Bible, will be from a theological point of view (Judeo-Christian) the foundation of his signature. It verifies the existence of a paradox between the analysis of the premodern design of his signature, with what is considered the modern beginning of the designin visual communication (graphic): the printing press of J. Gutenberg and the first Bible printed by him, in 1450. As a conclusion we can affirm that the signature of the Admiral with his Gothic letter courtesan, typical of the Middle Ages, was the opposite of the postulates of one of the first phases of Modernity called: Modern Age.
