Resumen
TCC(graduação) - Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina. Centro de Ciências Biológicas. Biologia.
ocorrem no Brasil.
realizadas sempre no período matutino.
50 indivíduos no verão e 11 no outono.
The scorpions are very ancient animals and probably one of the first to live on the settle land. Its
distribution is wide, occurring in all the continents, excepting Antartida. At present 1500 scorpions
species are described and distributed among 13 families, of which 5 occurs in Brazil. In the
current study, a survey concerning scorpions was carried out in the area of “restinga” located in
Praia da Pinheira, Palhoça, Santa Catarina. The aims, apart from identifying the collected species,
were to verify the sex ratio, analyze the occurrence of individuals in both periods of collection and
compare their distribution in the regions of more and less anthropic influence. In order to do so,
pitfalls and manual daily collections methodologies were combined. Two quarterly collections
were made, being the first fulfilled between 13 and 20 of February and the second between 10 and
17 of April of 2008. Two different areas were chosen to implement the collections, one located
inside a domiciliary territory (area I) and the other inside the State Park Serra do Tabuleiro (area
II). In the collections made with pitfalls, in each area two lines of traps were installed, distant 15 m
one from another. Each of such lines had 30 traps (500 ml plastic glasses), distant 2 m one from
another, connected by drift fences. In what concerns the manual collections, a total number of 8
searches took place in each area, being four executed in each period of collection. Each of these
searches lasted for 1 hour and they were carried out always in the morning. A total of 79 scorpions
were collected, all belonging to the species Bothriurus bonariensis, being 61 (77.22%) of them
collected through the pitfalls and 18 (22.78%) through manual collections. In relation to the sex
ratio, the result of all manual collections, as well as the result obtained using the pitfalls during the
autumn, presented the expected proportion of 1 :1 . On the other hand, the result obtained from
the analysis of the pitfalls during the summer strongly rejected this proportion. This is due to the
great number of males captured in the traps during the summer, as a consequence of the increase
of male activity during the reproductive period. The pitfalls captured 50 individuals during the
summer and 11 during the autumn. Such difference was statistically meaningful, revealing that the
season of the year had a meaningful influence in the number of scorpions captured through the
pitfalls. Even though the pitfalls located in area II captured more scorpions, both in summer and
autumn, than those located in area I, such difference was not considered to be statistically
meaningful. This result leads to the conclusion that areas I and II can be considered to be equal in
terms of quantity of individuals. The low number of individuals collected during the autumn, in
comparison to the summer, confirmed the expected reduction of activity of these arachnids during
the coldest months. The results of the study point to a low diversity of scorpions in the analyzed
area. Despite the relative abundance of this species in Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul,
practically nothing is known regarding its ecology in Brazil, and much less in Santa Catarina.
