The elegy "To the All-Powerful Inka Atawallpa", "Apu lnka Atawallpaman ", has been studied from various very interesting perspectives. Amongst them, its hybrid nature has been pointed out because, among other things, it follows a structure which revealingly draws it near European Literature. Nevertheless, the poem contains elements which suggest a possible influence between this Kechuan elegy and Saint John of the Cross' "Cántico espiritual". Through symbols such as the luminous eyes, the grieving dove and the deer, as well as, and still more importantly, their profound meanings, we will study the parallels that can be traced between these two poems, which, on the other hand, are so dissimilar. For that matter, we will try to underline the literary hybridness.La "Elegía por la muerte de Atahualpa", "Apu lnka Atawallpaman ", ha sido estudiada desde varias perspectivas sobremanera interesantes. Entre ellas, se ha destacado su carácter mestizo por seguir, entre otras cosas, estructuras que la acercan develadoramente a Ia literatura europea. Sin embargo, el poema contiene elementos que nos sugieren una posible influencia, a todas luces, sobrecogedora, entre esta elegía quechua y el "Cántico espiritual" de San Juan de la Cruz. A través de símbolos como los ojos lumínicos, la paloma gimiente y el venado, y, más importante aún, sus significaciones profundas, estudiaremos los paralelos que se desprenden de estos dos poemas, por otra parte tan disímiles. De esta manera, intentaremos subrayar el mestizaje literario que encierra este bellísimo poema, cuyo mensaje, irrecusablemente identificado con la voz silenciada del pueblo quechua, nos muestra aleccionadoramente que culturas en pugna se abrazan en la poesía.
