Immunological modulation of neural stem cells in the adult brain

Breast cancer is one of the leading causes of female mortality in the world, and early detection is an important means of reducing the mortality rate. The presence of microcalcification clusters has been considered as a very important indicator of malignant types of breast cancer, and its detection is important to prevent and treat the disease. This paper presents an effective approach, in order to detect microcalcification clusters in digitized mammograms, based on the synergy of image processing and partitional (hard and fuzzy) clustering techniques. Mathematical morphology has been used for image processing, and is used in this work as a first step, with the purpose of enhancing the contrast of microcalcifications. Image segmentation is an important task in the field of image processing, in order to identify regions with the same features. In the second step, we use image segmentation, using three partitional, hard and fuzzy clustering algorithms, such as k-Means, Fuzzy c-Means and Possibilistic Fuzzy c-Means, in order to make a comparison of the advantages and drawbacks offered by these algorithms, and which should help to improve the detection of microcalcification clusters in digitized mammograms. Melo-Granados, E.R.",,"2010",,"Objective: To evaluate the anatomic and visual outcomes of patients treated with vitrectomy and preservative free triamcinolone-assisted internal limiting membrane peeling for idiopathic macular hole. Methods: We carried out a retrospective chart review of idiopathic macular hole and divided patients into two groups. Group 1 included eyes that were symptomatic for less than 6 months (acute) and group 2 included eyes with chronic symptoms (> 6 months). All surgeries involved triamcinolone-assisted internal limiting membrane peeling. All patients had a 12-month clinical post operative follow-up period. Main outcome measures included anatomic macular hole closure, visual acuity, and surgical complications. Results: Thirty eight eyes of thirty eight patients were included, 21 in group 1 and 17 in group 2. Anatomic closure was achieved in 38 eyes (100%), with a statistically significant difference in pre and post-operative visual acuity in both groups. Conclusions: Internal limiting membrane peeling assisted with preservative free triamcinolone acetonide is safe and provides excellent anatomic and functional outcomes in eye surgery for acute or chronic idiopathic macular hole. These areas are populated by adult neural stem cells (aNSC) that are regulated by a number of molecules and signaling pathways, which control their cell fate choices, survival and proliferation rates. For a long time, it was believed that the immune system did not exert any control on neural proliferative niches. However, it has been observed that many pathological and inflammatory conditions significantly affect NSC niches. Even more, increasing evidence indicates that chemokines and cytokines play an important role in regulating proliferation, cell fate choices, migration and survival of NSCs under physiological conditions. Hence, the immune system is emerging is an important regulator of neurogenic niches in the adult brain, which may have clinical relevance in several brain diseases.
