ABSTRACT:
The landscape has been very important role in the main research topics in various areas of human knowledge, both in the social and human sciences as well as in the physical and biological, it is a concept that has been attributed a versatility that allows different disciplines to do contributions based on their approach, showing hegemony those studies based on a dominant Western ideology, where the term has its origins. However, we must consider the diversity both natural and human that exists and that could enrich the term or redefine it. In this study we emphasize in the landscape how the people who live in it perceive and imagine it, the territory admired, used and occupied by the members of the local community. Notions of landscape ecology (spatial patterns of distribution) of cultural geography (climate, water, vegetation, shape of relief, and interaction of man with the environment) and landscape anthropology (perception, symbolism and landscape meanings) were resumed for the understanding of the landscape in an integral way. Our particular approach considers the perception of the landscape in a western rural community such as El Carpio in Córdoba Andalucía, Spain, with the perception of the Purhépechas indigenous community of Carapan, in Michoacán, Mexico. Both material and anthropic and symbolic elements of each community and six dimensions were established: material-natural, aesthetic, ethical, symbolic, practical utilitarian and political, with which the inhabitants of both communities associate the term landscape, to then make a comparison and verify that in this indigenous world view, nature plays a highly symbolic role as a fundamental part of the landscape. Both material and anthropic and symbolic elements of each community and six dimensions were established: material-natural, aesthetic, ethical, symbolic, practical-utilitarian and political, with which the inhabitants of both communities associate the term landscape, to then make a comparison and prove that in that indigenous Cosmo vision, nature plays a highly symbolic role as a fundamental part of the landscape. In this way we have that both communities share similarities in the association of the landscape in the aesthetic, symbolic and material-natural dimensions, however, in the indigenous community there is a strong ethical component and symbolism associated mainly with Mesoamerican conceptions of the lifetime.
