Bats use ultrasonic sounds for orientation and prey detection. Of the varied echolocation sounds emitted, the search phase echolocation sounds have been found to be characteristic of families, genera and species and referred to as vocal signatures. The vocal signatures help provide a means to identify species of free flying bats. This provides a non-invasive means to sample bat communities contributing to more complete inventories, understand habit preferences, relative abundance and temporal activity patterns. This study describes the calls of the non-phyllostomid insectivorous bats know to occur in the Huatulco National Park and provides information on foraging and relative activity at sample sites. Sampling was conducted from February to July, September and November 2009. Acoustic data was recorded using the AnaBat™ SD1 system for eight hours per night. The qualitative and quantitative characteristics of the echolocation calls were analyzed.
