Photography was one of the great inventions developed in the 19th century and, as soon as possible, it became an instrument in several scientific areas, transforming the organization of visual records. In this sense, this article aims to illuminate the process of insertion of photographic activity in the police sphere, capable of individualizing and making the dangerous ones recognizable, in addition to highlighting the photographic aesthetics adopted by different institutions in the construction of albums for Brazilian and Portuguese criminals.   Key words: photography; crime; police; criminal albums; science.A fotografia foi um dos grandes inventos desenvolvidos no século XIX e, tão logo foi possível, tornou-se instrumento de diversas áreas científicas, transformando a organização dos registros visuais. Nesse sentido, o presente artigo tem o objetivo de iluminar o processo de inserção da atividade fotográfica em âmbito policial, capaz de individualizar e tornar reconhecível os indivíduos perigosos, além de evidenciar a estética fotográfica adotada por diferentes instituições na construção de álbuns de criminosos de brasileiros e portugueses.
