Introduction: SDPF is defined as anterior knee pain with multifactorial etiologies around the patella that can be triggered by activities that demand a very high demand, causing a biomechanical imbalance. This disorder is more frequent in women, being responsible for 33% of knee pathologies among women and 17% of these pathologies in men. In recent years, the addition of strengthening of the lateral lateral hip complex in rehabilitation along with strengthening of the knee muscles has emerged as a form of treatment based on the hypothesis that hip movements in the frontal plane (adduction) and transverse plane (internal rotation) increase compressive forces on the patellofemoral joint in activities leading to pain. Objective: This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of strengthening the hip CPL in sedentary women with PFPS, in reducing pain, improving function and gaining muscle strength. Method: We used a systematic review of randomized controlled clinical trials elected from 2004 on in the Pubmed / Medline, Scielo, Lilacs, Physiotherapy Evidence Database (PEDro) and Cochrane databases. Results: Of the 2,654 selected articles, 2,564 were removed due to low methodological quality, with 36 articles included in this study for qualitative analysis. Conclusion: After analyzing all the articles, it was possible to infer in general that the strengthening of the lateral posterolateral complex of the hip prior to the weight-bearing program and in isolation results in pain reduction and improvement of function, however its result is maximized when combined with the traditional knee muscle strengthening protocol.
