There are many challenges in the humanization of women and newborn care in the hospital setting, since the hegemony of the biomedical model in obstetric and neonatal care is strongly present (BRAZIL, 2014). The humanization of childbirth care implies that the professional's performance respects the aspects of the physiology of the woman, the social and cultural aspects of childbirth and delivery, and emotional support to the woman and her family (BRASIL, 2014). The situational diagnosis at Maternity of Hospital Júlia Kubitschek (HJK) shows that the rate of childbirth attended by nurses does not reach 50%. In view of the above, it is intended to present a proposal for intervention with the main objective of identifying and discussing the challenges to strengthen the performance of obstetrical nurses at HJK Maternity. A collective discussion of the situational diagnosis of the sector, of the current model of obstetric care and of the absence of the Multidisciplinary Clinical Protocol of Assistance to Childbirth and Delivery at a meeting of the Managing Collegium was held. Meetings were held with the obstetrical and general nurses of the sector and nursing coordination and with the Assistant Manager of the HJK to discuss the work process and present the idea of elaborating an intervention project; we created a questionnaire for the group of obstetrical nurses that will be analyzed qualitatively; we held a meeting with an obstetric nurse in the network, working in the maternity hospital Odete Valadares (MOV) and participant in the elaboration of the Multidisciplinary Clinical Protocol of Assistance to Childbirth and Delivery of the Fhemig Network, to discuss the context of HJK maternity care, when a proposal of a seminar emerged; that was the First Obstetrical Nursing Seminar of the Júlia Kubitschek Maternity: challenges and possibilities for professional performance. In the Seminar, we presented 03 directorates composed by representatives of great relevance of the obstetrical scenario in Belo Horizonte, where subjects on the scenario of obstetric nursing in the HJK, obstetric nursing residency and the role of management in this context were discussed. To further strengthen obstetrical nursing in HJK maternity, in addition to the seminar, I will focus on sensitization meetings of the multiprofessional staff to discuss issues related to humanized childbirth and the relevance of nursing performance as a whole in this process.
