Resumen
This article is part of a larger research focused on the study of one of the most influential members of the Brazilian historical and Geographical Institute in the transition period from empire to republic, namely Benjamin Franklin Ramiz Galvão. Accepted as a member of the IHGB in 1872, Galvão served actively at the Institute for 66 years. Together with Count of Afonso Celso and Max Fleiüss, he participated in the socalled “Trinity of the Silogeu”, a sort of fundamental nucleus responsible for conducting the work within the institution He also held positions in various commissions, directed the IHGB Magazine and assumed the role of perpetual speaker of the association. He was, therefore, a specialist in memory, not only because of his devotion as an academic to the construction of the national memory, but also because of his commitment to piecing together his memory and that of his peers. Memory and, more specifically, the memory construction work he carried out within the IHGB is the main object of study in this article. We will try to analyze the process of “framing” Ramiz Galvão ́s memory within the Institute, highlighting the creation of his image as a legitimate republican intellectual. For this, we will focus chiefly on some of the main homages bestowed on him by the IHGB between 1918 and 1946.
