Such as diabetes mellitus (DM) is a disease that needs changes that last
for a lifetime, it is necessary an educational action to instruct and educate the
diabetic the importance of their knowledge about the disease as an integral part
of care. The objective of this project was to develop an action plan aimed at
reducing the main Diabetes Mellitus -DM risk factors and its complications in a
Family Health Strategy Unit at UBS Londrina in the city Santa Luzia General -
Minas. Methodology: This is a qualitative descriptive study of patients treated at
a clinic for a Basic Health Unit The study included 752 diabetic patients selected
by systematic sampling. Data were collected through semi-structured
interviews. The questions guiding the interview were composed of subjects
related to knowledge acquired regarding DM, therapy, nutrition, self-monitoring,
physical activity and body care. Results: Respondents showed a poor
knowledge of diabetes mellitus, drug therapy, nutrition and the importance of
physical activity. The self-monitoring has been referred to as necessary for foot
care since it was one of the body care to be adopted. Knowledge about the
questioned theme was higher after carrying out educational activities. It was
concluded that after reformulate educational policies, patients roasted to know
more about their disease, highlighting the importance of health education for
