The hippotherapy as a technique has provided in the areas of health,
education and riding, biopsychosocial benefits, which are highlighted in the adequacy of
muscle tone, coordination, balance, strength development, body awareness, self-confidence,
sociability, this technique works aspects as: affection, self-confidence, memory and also the
socialization of the patient with the environment in which lives. These gains are important
in the treatment of various diseases, physical or mental. This proposal aims to determine the
contribution in the development of hippotherapy for children with special needs. It
constitutes a literature review through critical analysis of scientific articles, the survey was
conducted by searching using the following databases: Scielo, Lilacs, Medline, Pubmed,
CAPES and OTDbase. Most studies showed positive results in relation to the horse, with
his movements and symbols of strength and power, provided the children improved motor
behavior and the behavioral repertoire, greater independence, motivation and selfesteem. There were significant improvements in aspects psychological, behavioral, social and motor.
