Resumen
Recent academic works have classified graveyards as significant sources of environmental contamination. Besides seen as harmful to the environment, cemeteries carry a stigma of being obscure places that bring more damage than benefits to the neighborhood in which they are located. That way the positive aspects are never emphasized, especially the contributions that some types of necropolis such as memorial parks could bring to the urban surroundings, for being wide green covered areas. Therefore the aim of this study is to
refute the necropolis’ bad reputation by trying to prove their social and environmental positive contributions
based on microclimatologic and spatial appropriation studies carried out at Cemitério da Paz, in Belo
Horizonte, in 2014. The softwares ENVI-met© version 4.0 Beta1 and Rayman© version 1.2 were used,
respectively, for the simulations of climatic aspects and thermal comfort of users in different situations of soil cover. The results show that the architecture and the landscape design of a Park-Cemetery can contribute positively to the microclimate of the surroundings and promote leisure uses within such urban spaces. However, if we compare the actual situation with the simulated one all covered by paving, we can see that there was no significant difference in the estimated thermal comfort of the users.
