Resumen
The issue of medical waste has been a subject of great concern in recent decades in
many countries worldwide. The routing solutions for the management of waste by the
agencies that manage the environmental and occupational problems, should include a set of
measures to ensure both the knowledge of their characteristics and impacts caused by them,
as the development and implementation of instruments necessary for decision and the forms
and levels of intervention most appropriate. It is international consensus the view of recycling
as the best way to minimize waste. When it comes to health, it is necessary to implant the
entire system of segregation, separating so-called safe or treating contaminated waste. The
recyclable solid waste by definition is the ability to return a certain element to the cycle of
origin, and talking about treatability of wastes, it was agreed to call all those recyclable
materials as the returnable to the productive cycle (Teixeira, Gisele Pereira, Carvalho, 2005).
This work was made from a descriptive study related to the waste generated in a hospital of
high complexity in the municipality of Juiz de Fora / MG, with the aim of proposing to the
hospital managers, the tables drawn from analysis of the documentation that should show the
cost benefit of deploying the selective collection. For gravimetric composition of the waste
generated in the hospital, focusing on that is suitable for recycling was identified and
described all material that is segregated today. It was clearly observed the inefficiency of the
process, where only 7.54% of total waste generated are segregated for this purpose. This
situation brings burdens to the Hospital in many ways, because it loses revenue in the sale and
pay more for transport and disposal of waste. With the data collected and shown, it is believed
to be possible for managers to give greater support to this important segment - recycling. This
process, as well as collaborating with the management of hospitals waste confers benefits
such as reducing the amount of waste, the costs of treatment and disposal, and contribute to
reducing environmental impact and increase the useful life of landfills. It can also be a valuable
contribution for the community, creating jobs and helping cooperatives that collect recyclables
from municipalities as well as being in line with the latest legislation of the country - the
National Solid Wastes established by Federal Law 12,305 at 2th August, 2010.
