Resumen
Botulism is a poisoning caused by the ingestion of toxins produced by Clostridium botulinum which can affect mammals and birds. In this study three cases of botulism are reported in cattle in three properties located in Mariana, Capitólio and Sete Lagoas, cities from different regions of Minas Gerais state, Brazil. The morbidity rate was 46.3 % (32 /69), 19.5 % (8 /41) and 16.6 % (1/ 6), mortality of 40.5 % (28 /69), 12, 1 % (5 /41) and 0% (0 /6) and lethality of 87.5% (28/ 32), 62.5 % (5/ 8) and 0% (0 /1), respectively. There was an outbreak in two properties, where several animals showed clinical signs and, in one of them clinical signs were observed in only one animal. In the two farms where the outbreak occurred, the intervention was given when the deaths had happened. After treatment, no animal has died or presented new clinical signs. Treated animals showed a recovery rate of 100%. The treatment was carried on with the administration of serum, oral fluid therapy and nursing care. The results of serum therapy met the expectations, with recovery of some animals and no appearance of new clinical cases in the herd.
