To determine the association between nutritional status and blood pressure levels in adolescents
treated at the Polyclinic EsSalud El Porvenir, 2015.
Methods and material:
The association between nutritional status and blood pressure levels were studied in 217
adolescents of both sexes aged 10 years and under 18 years in outpatient Polyclinic EsSalud El Porvenir - La Libertad. For the present study design, observational, analytical and crosssectional was used. Results:
41.9% of the population were male while 58.1% were female. 32.3% were aged between 13
and 14 years, 31.8% between 11 and 12 years, 24.9% between 15 and 16 years and 11.1%
between 17 and 18 years. The average body mass index was 22.3 ± 3.3 and SD. Mean SBP was
117.6 mmHg ± 5.1 mmHg and DBP average of 74.2 ± 4.8 mmHg. 12.9% were obese, 27.6%
59.5% overweight and normal weight. Of adolescents treated 5.1% had hypertension, 32.7%
pre-hypertension, 62.2% normotensive and none had hypotension. The percentage of
hypertensive adolescents with obesity was 63.6%, 36.4% overweight and normal weight 0.0%.
The percentage of pre-hypertensive obese adolescents was 28.2%, 64.8% overweight and
normal weight 7.0%. The percentage of normotensive adolescents with obesity was 0.7%, 7.4%
overweight and normal weight was 91.9%. The results show that if there is enough statistical
evidence to say that there is an association between the variables under study (X² = 169.15 and
p <0.05)
Conclusions:
If there is an association between nutritional status and blood pressure levels in adolescents.
