En los últimos 25 años, la prevalencia del consumo de tabaco ha aumentado en un 70%. Actualmente, el 82% de los fumadores se encuentran en países en desarrollo, demostrando que hay un cambio en la orientación de esta epidemia. En Colombia, el 19.8% de las personas entre 18 y 69 años son fumadores. En esta revisión teórica, se exploraron los factores influyentes en el consumo de tabaco. Los hallazgos indican que el marketing y la publicidad valiéndose de la imagen, la motivación a través del refuerzo y los factores socioculturales como los pares y familiares, son determinantes en el consumo.
