El presente trabajo de investigación consistió en la Caracterización de suelos con relación al cambio de uso de la tierra en las Comunidades Nativas de Santa Rey y Balta del Distrito de Purús, Ucayali; teniendo como objetivo caracterizar las propiedades de los suelos con relación al cambio de uso de la tierra. Dado que los suelos tienen usos según sus características físicas, químicas y ecológicas el cambio en el uso de estos en los bosques amazónicos está enteramente relacionado a la apertura de nuevas áreas del bosque para el asentamiento de poblados, establecimiento de cultivos agrícolas y la crianza de animales lo cual facilita el proceso de deforestación y de gradación de los suelos. La metodología consistió en identificar las unidades de muestreo de acuerdo al desarrollo de las actividades económicas en relación al uso del suelo para construir los respectivos perfiles de suelo y definir la calidad edáfica. Los resultados obtenidos en las propiedades físicas muestran que a mayor grado de intervención del suelo mayor variación en sus valores, tal es así, que la Densidad aparente varia de 1.25 g/cc en suelos de cultivo (ligero grado de compactación) a 1.60 g/cc en purma; en cuanto a sus características hidráulicas entran en CDC desde 0.10 hasta 0.42 cc agua/cc suelo; su PMP está entre 0.10 y 0.28 cc agua/cc suelo; el contenido de AD para cultivo es de 0.10 a 0.15 cc agua/cc suelo (aceptable). Las propiedades químicas de los suelos en estudio mostraron diferencias de acuerdo al uso del suelo: presentando una variación del valor de pH; el contenido de materia orgánica varía entre 0.13% en cultivo a 7.78% en bosque; el fósforo disponible fue de 16.10 a 91.77 kg de P2O5.ha-1; potasio disponible fue 314.50 a 1 288.87 kg de K2O.ha-1 (bajo a muy alto). Los resultados obtenidos son similares a los reportados por Sánchez et al, (2002) quienes señalan que el contenido de materia orgánica, CIC y potasio fueron algunas de las características más sensibles al cambio de uso de la tierra y concluyen que estos podrían ser usados como indicadores para determinar la calidad del suelo. Se encontró que las áreas intervenidas muestran un deterioro de las propiedades físicas debido al uso de sistemas de producción tradicional.
