En las zonas rurales de Sudamérica, la alpaca es un animal crucial para la subsistencia económica de las familias locales y representa un rol fundamental en la cohesión social de la región. Este camélido es considerado un recurso invaluable para las comunidades que lo crían y cuidan. Perú, produce el ochenta por ciento de la fibra de alpaca a nivel mundial (Carhuapoma et al., 2009), y la calidad de esta fibra es influenciada por varios factores, incluyendo aspectos medioambientales, genéticos y fisiológicos; entre estos factores se encuentran la edad, las temporadas del año, la nutrición, el sexo y la variedad de raza (Franco et al., 2009).
