El aumento continuo de la población y su consumo a una gran escala, ocasionan la contaminación del suelo debido a que el sistema crea diferentes necesidades artificiales demandando de recursos naturales para su producción, recurriendo a la explotación de territorios generando impactos ambientales. La contaminación de suelos por minería a nivel mundial, nacional y en la actualidad en el Perú, generan conflictos sociales y la destrucción y desertización de extensas hectáreas de suelo habiendo contaminaciones impactantes en diferentes zonas del país reflejándose principalmente en la devastación del suelo y contaminación del agua. Existen diferentes tipos de explotación minera, relacionados al mineral a extraer y el tipo de método que se utiliza para la extracción. Estos se caracterizan por el tamaño de suelo que remueven, las sustancias químicas que utilizan en la actividad minera y la intensidad de impacto ambiental que generan. Se reconocen diferentes tipos o métodos de explotación minera. Estos son las siguientes: minas a superficie o cielo abierto, minas subterráneas y minería de dragado. Para la remediación de suelos contaminados por minería se aplican diferentes métodos o tratamientos, teniendo en cuenta el tipo de contaminante, características del suelo, eficiencia del tratamiento, viabilidad económica y el tiempo estimado para su desarrollo. Las tecnologías más comunes para la remediación de suelos impactados son los tratamientos fisicoquímicos, térmicos y biológicos; teniendo en cuenta que el de método de tratamiento para remediar suelos debe ser la más apropiada.
