Resumen
How can the Island of Puerto Rico, a US territory in the Caribbean, be transformed into a knowledge-based economy to play a significant role in the networked global community? This has been one of the critical inquiries of a group of faculty from different disciplines at the University of Puerto Rico, together with partners from the corporate and public sectors who accepted an invitation to collaborate in bringing innovative answers to this question. Under the leadership and vision of the Graduate School of Information Sciences and Technology (GSIST), a Multidisciplinary Seminar on Knowledge Management was initiated in December, 2006 to focus on this challenging agenda. The GSIST proposed this project as part of its interest in expanding its curriculum offering in the field of knowledge management (KM). The Seminar implemented KM technologies to foster collaboration; among participants; assessed the needs for knowledge management professionals in PR, their future education and training requirements; explored how to envision a sustainable transformation within the Puerto Rican cultural context to an information and knowledge-based society.
