This paper analyzes, from the perspective of intellectual history, the theological debate during the first period of Chilean independence. Focusing on the public role of religious discourse and the political dimension of the clergy's activity, this work examines the discussions related to the problem of popular sovereignty, the theory of the divine right of kings, the religious justification of political change and the attempts to promote republican ideology from a Biblical perspective.
