Resumen
El embarazo y el parto implican potenciales riesgos para la salud, incluso en aquellas mujeres previamente sanas. Aproximadamente el 40% de las embarazadas puede sufrir problemas asociados al embarazo, y el 15% presenta complicaciones que tienen secuelas en el largo plazo o que ponen en peligro sus vidas. Conforme a estimaciones de la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS), cerca de 515.000 mujeres mueren anualmente en el mundo a causa de complicaciones asociadas al embarazo y al parto. Por lo general, la mayoría de estas muertes ocurre en países en desarrollo, debido a que con frecuencia las mujeres de estos países no tienen acceso a la atención necesaria para salvarles la vida.
