Gestational diabetes has been defined as glucose intolerance that is diagnosed for the
first time in pregnancy, and constitutes one of the most frequent complications of
pregnancy, it has been determined that there are predisposing factors that increase the
risk of developing gestational diabetes, such as obesity, overweight, family history of
diabetes mellitus, previous history of gestational diabetes. At the same time, it was
evidenced that this pathology entails maternal-fetal complications such as fetal
macrosomia, prematurity, hypoglycemia, hyperbilirubinemia, respiratory distress
syndrome, and preeclampsia.
Objective: To determine the factors that predispose to gestational diabetes. Method:
Observational, non-experimental, cross-sectional, retrospective study at the Matilde
Hidalgo de Procel Hospital during the period from January 2020 to December 2021.
Results: In this series it was shown that the most frequent age group belongs to the
group between 26-30 years with 34%. Among the most prevalent risk factors are that
65% of the sample had a family history of diabetes, and the vast majority have an
inadequate nutritional status, where the most frequent was type I obesity with 40%. The
most frequent gestational age at delivery was week 38 with 40%. Among the maternalfetal complications, the most frequent was fetal macrosomia found in 30% followed by
prematurity with 29%, preeclampsia with 18% and neonatal hypoglycemia with 12%.
