Background: Systemic amyloidosis and its types have a diverse clinical presentation which
becomes a great challenge for the clinician, therefore, it is important to describe information
on the clinical manifestations and epidemiological data of our reality.
Objective: To describe the clinical and epidemiological characteristics of systemic
amyloidosis at the SOLCA Cancer Institute, Cuenca 2005-2021.
Methodology: A descriptive quantitative research was carried out; the universe consisted of
10 patients diagnosed with systemic amyloidosis at the SOLCA Cancer Institute in Cuenca,
during the period 2005-2021; the data were obtained from clinical records and were analyzed
by means of frequency, tables with the statistical calculation program Microsoft Excel 2021,
and the statistical package Epi Info 7.
Results: The most affected organ in the population studied was the kidney; 90 % of the
patients had organ-specific clinical characteristics and an oncologic pathology as the basis.
The 60 % received chemotherapy as therapeutic management, 50 % did not have a survival
greater than one year of disease, 70 % relapsed and died.
Conclusions: The kidney was the most affected organ, most showed organ-specific
characteristics and had a history of oncologic pathology. Chemotherapy was the main
treatment, half of the studied population did not reach one year of survival, all patients who
relapsed, died.
