La quiebra demográfica de Castilla en la Baja Edad Media: ¿realidad o ficción virtual?

En este artículo sobre demografía histórica se aborda el estudio del crecimiento natural de la población de la corona de Castilla entre mediados del siglo XIII y finales del XIV. Analizado el fenómeno a dos escalas distintas, la regional (Benavente) y la "nacional" (corona de Castilla), se rebate la tesis que niega el balance regresivo de la evolución de los efectivos humanos y afirma que sólo se trató de una redistribución demográfica y de una reordenación del poblamiento por movimientos migratorios. Se defiende, por el contrario, la realidad y generalidad de la sensible pérdida del volumen de la población castellana, una verdadera quiebra demográfica que afectó no sólo al campo sino también a los núcleos urbanos y protourbanos, al tiempo que no sólo a las tierras del interior sino también a las zonas periféricas, y que estuvo motivada principalmente por un fuerte incremento de la tasa de mortalidad. Incluye en apéndice una relación de concesiones de disminución de la contribución fiscal a numerosos lugares castellanos.
