The nickel-zinc carbide (Ni3ZnC) was first synthesized by Stadelmaier in 1959, but in following years the study of this compound did not progress. However the Ni-Zn metalic phase has continued to be studied and applied, especially as a coating to reduce corrosion. The interest in the study of Ni3ZnC arose in 2004 trying to explain the superconductivity of nickel-magnesium carbide (Ni3MgC) which was reported in 2001, eventhough both carbides have the same structure and furthermore the Mg and Zn have the same charge (2+) the nickel-zinc carbide does not have such property, wich opens questions regarding their structure and the compound in general. Moreover the Ni3ZnC also have been studied and applied in different areas such as catalysis and electrochemical, and has being used in induction brazing. In this work the WIEN2k software, which is based on the density functional theory (DFT), was used to study the structural and electronic properties of the nickel-zinc carbide, by modifying their chemical composition and structure, and thus determine its structure more stable within our analized compounds, in addition to its optimum stoichiometry. Relations between the electronic properties of Ni3ZnC and its catalytic activity is also determined.
