Resumen
Dropping out of school is a theme present in several studies, in the area of Education, that seek to identify the reasons that lead students to drop out of school. This work brings another bias and seeks to understand the opposite: the reasons that lead students to proceed with studying. The general objective of this study is to analyze the most relevant factors for the permanence of high school students in Youth and Adult Education (EJA) at School of Application/UFRGS. The literature review addresses the history of youth and adult education in Brazil, the existing public policies for this modality, the profile of the students who attend it, the School of Application /UFRGS and the functioning of EJA in this institution, intrinsic and extrinsic motivations for permanence and, finally, a survey of articles published on evasion and permanence in EJA. The adopted methodology was the case study, in which a documental analysis of the entrance interviews of the students and three focus groups with students and ex-students of the EJA of School of Application was carried out. Through the analysis of the collected data, it can be understood that both intrinsic and extrinsic factors influence the permanence of students, however, the relationships and bonds that develop in the school stand out as the factors that most impact, especially the teacher-student relationship. From the research results, a set of suggestions to the educational institution was elaborated and can be used in the planned actions to favor the permanence of students in school.
