One of the main organization challenges is their ability to make consistent choices aligned with its strategic direction. In addition, some of the most important, and most complex, decisions made by organizations are those to determine which projects will be executed to maximize return to the organization. Thus, how choices are made can be the difference between good decisions or bad one. The use of good tools and appropriate support techniques can increase the chances of making the right decision. In software development companies, where technological innovations are constantly occurring, the use of Multi-criteria Decision Aid (MCDA) methodologies can increase the chances of success. This work aims to propose a method to support the selection and prioritization of software projects using Cognitive Mapping to structure the decision problem and the Analytic Hierarchy Process – AHP, a Multicriteria Decision Aid methodology with the Ratings approach. The research was developed based on a case study in order to validate the contribution of the method in this scenario. The results of this study highlight the importance of applying a method that assists in structuring complex problem and defining the criteria and sub-criteria that consider the strategy and objectives of the company.
