The multipurpose project El Azúcar, built in the sixties, currently managed by the National Secretariat of Water (SENAGUA), a reservoir that meets the demands of irrigation and drinking water, to Zapotal, Rio Verde, Chanduy, San Rafael, areas of the province of Santa Elena. Historically this region has a water deficit (the reservoir in 56 years was filled twice - El Niño phenomena), this causes the reservoir to receive water from the Chongón Project. In September/2021, the operating levels of the reservoirs, San Vicente and El Azúcar had minimum levels. In addition, the reservoir, due to cracks in the subsoil receives waters that seem to be brackish (waters of similar appearance to those of the San Vicente spa).
The present research studies the behavior of the reservoir, through: (i) the analysis of the volume, area and height of the dam (ii) the analysis of supply – demand of the project (iii) the operation curve of the reservoir and (iv) the analysis of flood rolling through the evaluation of the discharge structures (landfills).
The investigation determines that the useful volume of the reservoir is being used at approximately 50% of its capacity, which is why the reservoir received and could receive higher flows of water from the Chongón project, the analysis of the water determines a salinity of 90 to 110 ppm (international standard < to 500 ppm) and it is recommended to raise the level of the emergency pourer to the level 46.75 masl, which would minimize effects by floods downstream of the reservoir.
