The influence of low-order thinking skills on the development of reading comprehension

Abstract

The present research focuses on the importance of Lower Order Thinking Skills (LOTS) which are considered to be the first steps of critical thinking, sometimes mentioned as early critical thinking, on the development of reading comprehension. This research analyses to detail the aspects of Bloom’s taxonomy and the echelon of critical thinking that are represented by a pyramid. In addition to it, it also analyses the different aspects of reading comprehension with the goal of providing a didactic guide of LOTS on reading comprehension development, in order to help teacher, identify and apply ways to help students develop their early critical thinking or at the very least to reinforce it as much as possible, at the same time that it reinforces reading comprehension.

La presente investigación tiene por objetivo analizar y enfatizar la importancia del desarrollo de los primeros niveles de pensamiento crítico, conocidos en referencia a la taxonomía de Bloom como “Lower Order Thinking Skills” o LOTS, como punto de extrema relevancia en el desarrollo de la comprensión lectora del idioma inglés. La investigación fue realizada con la finalidad de basada en los resultados elaborar una guía didáctica que ayude a profesores a mejorar la comprensión lectora fortaleciendo las habilidades relacionadas con el pensamiento crítico temprano como reconocer, describir, resumir, comparar, aplicar, etc. Con esa finalidad la investigación presenta un análisis detallado de lo que es considerado comprensión lectora y los niveles de la taxonomía de Bloom.
