Determining the seasonal variation of macroalgae in the intertidal zone helps to understand the ecological connectivity of the locality, given that these ecosystems harbor a number of important specimens for the food chain. The present investigation was carried out at Chabela beach, located in the General Villamil Playas canton, during two seasons of the year; the first covers the months of April and May, concerning the rainy season, and the second October and November being this dry season, using the SARCE methodology. The
abundance of each specimen was recorded and estimated in proportion to its algal cover. As a result, 18 species of macroalgae were obtained; of which, the greatest specific richness belongs to the phyllum Rhodophyta (8 species), followed by the phyllum Chlorophyta (7 species) and Ochrophyta (3 species). The highest relative abundance in the algal cover was recorded during the dry season with a percentage of 64.19 %; there being a significant difference between seasons (U = 11466, p < 0.01). Chondracanthus spp and Gracilaria sp., showed a direct relationship with low temperatures (< 25°C), high salinities (> 30.00 UPS), oxygen (> 7.96 mg/L) and alkaline pH (> 8.00); while Gracilariopsis sp and Ceramium pacificum showed a direct relationship with high temperatures (> 28 °C), low salinities (> 28.60 UPS), oxygen (7.42 mg/L) and acidic pH (< 7.80).
