generando maloclusiones o alteraciones de la ATM Introduction: One of the habits that occurs most frequently is atypical swallowing, which
produces various oral effects such as anterior open bite; this last condition occurs during
childhood (infantile swallowing), since it is a physiological characteristic of sucking, but it
can also occur during the transition between temporary and permanent teeth. Objective: To
analyze the effect of myofunctional therapy on atypical swallowing habit. Methodology: The
methodology of this bibliographic review is of a documentary type, with a descriptive and
analytical level of study, it presents a transversal, deductive and retrospective method; in
addition, it presents a qualitative approach, 51 scientific articles were reviewed from 2016 to
2022, which were obtained on the web thanks to the search engines Google Scholar, Scielo,
Redalyc, and in the meta search engines PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane, of which,
based on inclusion and exclusion criteria were analyzed. Conclusion: The treatment of
atypical swallowing consists of several stages: myofunctional therapy should consist of a
series of exercises to improve the physiology of the tongue. Also, in cases of malocclusion,
orthodontic or orthopedic appliances may be recommended as appropriate. Recommendation:
Correct atypical swallowing in time, to avoid altering the abnormal development of the
craniofacial mass generating malocclusions or alterations of the TMJ
