The Puna island, since 2009 has been considered a protected area, in order to preserve its
cultural and natural patrimony. These characteristics generate a connection between past and
future, encouraging present-day tourists to appreciate the archaeological and biodiversity values
of the zone. In spite of the fact that the Parish of Puna has the infrastructure to be considered a
tourist destination, it has not been used us such. From this perspective the proposal of creating an
Interpretation Centre that will help to improve the conditions of the sector is particularly valuable,
with the aim of greatly improving its tourism framework. Additionally, in order to establish the
actual scenario for the development of tourism and culture in the communities of the North-West
part of Puna island, some research tools have been used like interviews, inquests and workshops
organized for the inhabitants and their representatives. A consequence is the fact that 75% of the
population is ready to participate in cultural activities, and this number will probably grow,
because the more people participate the greater will be the growth of cultural and tourist activities.
In conclusion it is reasonable to state that the Centre of interpretation will improve tourist
development, known as sustainable development, which generates a genuine symbiosis between
the economic and social sectors, thus developing a space which will serve as an example for
progress in the whole Puna Parish.
