Background: In the world, there are more than 347 million people with Diabetes
Mellitus (DM), being type 2 the great majority, representing 90% of the world cases.
Hypoglycemia is a common side effect of insulin therapy. Objective: to determine the
management of type 2 diabetes in relation to insulin use in the emergency of Jipijapa
Hospital. Methodology used was a quantitative approach, with a non-experimental,
cross-sectional design, whose universe was constituted by 167 clinical histories attended
at the emergency service of the Jipijapa hospital. The sample was 78 cases that presented
hypoglycemia during the study, data were collected on a previously designed form,
tabulation and analysis was performed in the Microsoft Excel program and SPSS version
21 software. Results: we observed high prevalence of hypoglycemia with 46, 7%, the
influential risk factors are being female, over 65, having more than 10 years of illness
and inadequate use of insulin. Conclusions: clinical and therapeutic ignorance and risk
factors influence the diabetic patient to perform hypoglycemia, before this should be a
control for their early detection time and prevent future complications. Therefore, a
diagnostic algorithm on the management of insulin in diabetics is proposed.
