Influence of pronunciation in the development of speaking skill

Abstract

This research was focused on the influence of pronunciation in the development of the speaking skill of the ninety students from 8th year of Vicente Rocafuerte High School in order to make students and also teachers conscious about the importance of practicing pronunciation since the lowest levels. The information collected in the theoretical framework support the influence of pronunciation in speaking skill making relevant the study of communicative approach and also other scientific fields like Linguistics, Pedagogical, Psychological, etc. Empirical data has been gotten through the use of instruments such as a survey to students complemented with a diagnostic test to measure the level of pronunciation by answering some questions spontaneously and also an interview toward the English teacher. This study was relevant because it looked for a solution to the problem that students had; improving pronunciation and practicing it through the use of games, that way students would get the correct pronunciation of words since the start making students develop a correct communication and interaction in the class. Furthermore, the results of the analysis of the survey confirmed that students had positive attitude towards the design of a didactic guide with games, making a learning environment that was fun, stress free and effective for improving their speaking skills. The findings of the study indicated that the application of a Didactic guide for the pronunciation treatment trough games might be an appropriate method for improving speaking skill in students

Esta investigación se centró en la influencia de la pronunciación en el desarrollo de la expresión oral de noventa alumnos de 8 º año del Colegio Vicente Rocafuerte, con el fin de sensibilizar a los alumnos y profesores sobre la importancia de practicar la pronunciación desde los niveles más bajos. La información recopilada en el marco teórico apoya la influencia de la pronunciación en la expresión oral haciendo relevante el estudio del enfoque comunicativo y también otras áreas de estudio científico como lo son: Lingüística, Pedagogía, Psicología. etc. Los datos empíricos se han obtenido a través del uso de instrumentos como: encuesta a los estudiantes que se complementó con una prueba de diagnóstico para medir el nivel de pronunciación respondiendo a algunas preguntas de forma espontánea y también una entrevista al profesor de inglés. Este estudio fue relevante porque buscó una solución al problema que tenían los estudiantes; mejorar la pronunciación y practicarla a través del uso de juegos, de esta manera los estudiantes obtendrían la pronunciación correcta de las palabras desde el comienzo haciendo que desarrollen una comunicación e interacción correcta en la clase. Además, los resultados del análisis de la encuesta confirmaron que los alumnos tenían una actitud positiva hacia el diseño de una guía didáctica con juegos, creando un ambiente de aprendizaje divertido, libre de estrés y efectivo para mejorar sus habilidades de expresión oral por lo tanto la aplicación de una guía didáctica para el tratamiento de la pronunciación a través de juegos podría ser beneficioso para sus estudios y contribuir en gran medida a su logro del lenguaj
