Extractive industry employment in Peru: A geographical or spatial analysis

| dc.description | This paper estimates the spatial or geographic effects of employment, income and production value of eleven mining centers upon the share of employment of the primary, secondary and tertiary sectors from the geographic areas wherein these centers are located. Based upon a Spatial Durbin Model, SDM, the main estimation results points outs that the ‘direct effects’ of the income or mining output generated in the geographic areas wherein the mining centers are located upon the share of employment in the primary, secondary and tertiary sectors of the same areas were statistically significative for most of the estimations (about 69,4% of them). Contrarily, these effects for the share of formal employment of the mining centers were not statistically significative for most of the estimations (about 61,1% of them). However, the ‘indirect’ geographic or spillovers effects of such an employment were significative particularly for the share of the informal employment of the secondary, tertiary and primary (in that order). These employment geographic spillovers effects has implied that changes in the formal employment share in the mining sectors were associated to changes in the informal employments shares of the secondary, tertiary and primary (in that order) of the geographic areas close to de mining production centers. | dc.description | El trabajo estima los efectos espaciales o geográficos del empleo, valor de producción e ingresos de los hogares en los centros de producción de once productos mineros sobre la participación laboral en los sectores primario, secundario y terciario de áreas geográficas cercanas y distantes a dichoscentros. Basado en una especificación dinámica espacial ‘Durbin’, los resultados señalan que los efectos ‘directos’ de cambios de los ingresos y el valor de producción en los centros mineros sobre la participación del empleo (formal e informal) han sido, para la mayoría de las estimaciones (específicamente en el 69,4% de los casos) estadísticamente significativos. En cambio, los efectos‘directos’ del empleo formal de los centros mineros sobre las mismas participaciones en la mayoría de los casos (específicamente en el 61,1%) no han sido estadísticamente significativos. Sin embargo, y a diferencia de los efectos de ingresos o de producción, los efectos del empleo formal en los centros mineros han tenido un componente indirecto o de derramamiento-‘spillover’ espacial o geográfico estadísticamente significativo sobre el empleo (particularmente de los informales de los sectores) secundario, terciario y en menor medida en el primario. Estos efectos espaciales han significado que cambios en el empleo formal minero en los centros de producción incidenen el empleo (básicamente informal) secundario, terciario y primario (en ese orden) en las áreas geográficas cercanas a dichos centros de producción.
