El Morro constituye uno de los mejores ejemplos de las manifestaciones volcánicas de edad neógena que se encuentran en las Sierras Pampeanas. Su compleja historia geológica y su particular morfología, que lo destaca en el paisaje de la región, han concentrado la atención de los investigadores provocando una serie de controversias sobre su origen. Su forma es casi circular, con un diámetro de 9 kilómetros, y se eleva más de 400 metros sobre la llanura circundante. En la parte superior presenta una depresión de unos 4 kilómetros de diámetro. Las efusiones volcánicas, que ocurrieron entre 6 y 2 millones de años atrás, son episodios vinculados con el levantamiento de la cordillera andina y su especial interés radica en que se produjeron muy lejos de la misma.
