This article reviews three earlier, mostly divergent, interpretations of the poem "La otra" by Gabriela Mistral—initial poem of Lagar, 1954—and proposes a new reading which does not entirely coincide with the previous ones. A division in four parts is postulated. The first three revolve around the theme of the dual personality alluded to in the title of the poem. The last part, which contains some semantic incongruities, is seen as an attempt to justify the 'crime' revealed in the poem.Este artículo revisa tres interpretaciones anteriores, mayormente divergentes, del poema "La otra" de Gabriela Mistral—poema inicial de "Locas mujeres", sección que abre Lagar, 1954— y propone una nueva lectura que no coincide enteramente con ninguna de las propuestas anteriores. Se postula una división del poema en cuatro partes, las tres primeras centradas en el tema del doble explicitado en el título del poema y la última, en la que se anotan ciertas incongruencias semánticas, vista como una defensa del 'crimen' revelado en el poema.
