RANKL.
Probiotics are beneficial bacteria that improve the overall health of the body and can
be useful in controlling periodontal diseases and cavities. However, there are no
studies that relate the use of probiotics in endodontics. Thus, the aim of this study
was to analyze and compare the development of periapical lesions in rats with a
normal diet or a diet supplemented with probiotics. For this purpose, 16 albino Wistar
rats, all receiving induction of periapical lesion, were allocated into two groups as
follows: Control Group (CG) (n = 8) normal diet; Probiotic Complex Group (GCP) (n =
8) systemic diet with a probiotic complex (Probiotic Complex Daily Need, GNC ™).
Throughout the experimental period the weight of the animals and the feed
consumed were tabulated. After 30 days of injury induction and administration of the
diets, the animals were euthanized and the mandibles were removed, fixed in
formaldehyde, decalcified in EDTA. Then they were embedded in paraffin to obtain
histological sections. Histological sections were stained with hematoxylin and eosin
for analysis of the inflammatory process and immunostained with proteins that
regulate cellular activities in bone tissue remodeling: TRAP, OPG and RANKL. The
data obtained were submitted to statistical analysis, observing a reduction in the
inflammatory process and bone resorption in apical periodontitis. Therefore,
supplementation of probiotic complexes had an influence on reducing the
development of apical periodontitis.
