Obras primas de nossa literatura militar: expectativas e recepções às narrativas de guerra de Alfredo Taunay e Euclides da Cunha

Abstract

A presente dissertação tem como objetivo analisar a produção historiográfica de Alfredo d’Escragnolle Taunay (1843 – 1899) e Euclides da Cunha (1866 – 1909) por meio de uma função específica: a de “correspondente militar”, ocupada por Alfredo Taunay durante a Guerra do Paraguai (1864 – 1870) e por Euclides da Cunha durante a Guerra de Canudos (1896 – 1897). Dessa maneira, apoiada em indagações pertinentes à História da Historiografia, a pesquisa foi estruturada em três seções: a primeira trata das expectativas depositadas nestes autores no momento de suas nomeações para a função de correspondente militar; a segunda dedica-se à análise das narrativas produzidas por Taunay e Cunha no exercício da função para a qual foram designados; e a terceira, por fim, aborda como os correspondentes e suas narrativas foram recepcionados pelo Instituto Histórico e Geográfico Brasileiro, pela Academia Brasileira de Letras e outros públicos. Com essa estrutura, busca-se identificar características referentes à composição de um “regime historiográfico” nomeado por leitores de Taunay e Cunha como “Literatura Militar”. Tal “Literatura Militar” é apresentada como um meio de agrupar as narrativas de guerra realizadas por ambos os correspondentes como modos exemplares de como a história das guerras deveria ser escrita em fins de século XIX e início de XX.

The present dissertation aims to analyze the historiographical production of Alfredo d’Escragnolle Taunay (1843 – 1899) and Euclides da Cunha (1866 – 1909) through the specific attribution of “military correspondent”, a role occupied by Alfredo Taunay during the Paraguayan War (1864 – 1870) and by Euclides da Cunha during the Canudos War (1896 – 1897). Supported by inquiries from the History of Historiography, this research was structured in three sections: the first one deals with the expectations placed over these authors in the moment of their appointments as military correspondents; the second one is dedicated to the analysis of the narratives produced by Taunay and Cunha in the exercise of the function for which they were designated; finally, the third one addresses how the correspondents and their narratives were received by the Brazilian Historical and Geographical Institute, the Brazilian Academy of Letters and other readers. With this structure, we seek to identify characteristics referring to the composition of a “historiographical regime” named by those readers of Taunay and Cunha as “Military Literature”. Such “Military Literature” is presented as a mean of grouping the war narratives written by both correspondents as exemplary ways of how the history of wars should be written in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
