Resumen
This chapter presents vegetable fibers and their potential for the reinforcement of cementitious materials. Different approaches for improving the processing, physical-mechanical performance and durability of nonconventional fiber-cement composites are highlighted in order to demonstrate the capability of the vegetable fibers for engineering applications. Beyond the introduction to vegetable fibers, the content of this review is divided in the following topics: (i) characterization of the fibers from nano-to macro scales; (ii) a case study of bamboo fibers production; (iii) their application as optimized reinforcement of cement based composites; and (iv) an overview of the composite behavior after exposure to accelerated aging conditions. Final remarks briefly discuss future research needs.

Optical router for optical fiber sensor networks based on a liquid crystal cell
Vargas, Salvador; Sánchez Pena, José Manuel; Vázquez, Carmen; Aranda, Angel; Pérez, Isabel (09/04/2003)Optical fiber sensor networks are evolving rapidly. They are used because of the inert nature of optical fibers allowing no electromagnetic interference and safe applications in inflammable atmospheres; other relevant ... -

Thermal tunability of photonic bandgaps in photonic crystal fibers selectively filled with nematic liquid crystal
Instituto de Estudos Avançados - IEAv; Instituto Tecnológico de Aeronáutica - ITA; Universidade Estadual Paulista (Unesp) (2010-12-01)We address the bandgap effect and the thermo-optical response of high-index liquid crystal (LC) infiltrated in photonic crystal fibers (PCF) and in hybrid photonic crystal fibers (HPCF). The PCF and HPCF consist of solid-core ...
