Typography beyond the instrumental relationship: Cultural mediation manifested through the special notebook “Planeta seca”

Abstract

This work aims to understand the typography as a symbolic manifestation that presents contents beyond the text and beyond the technique that configures it, having the context of production and the one to which it represents, preponderant roles in the mediation of information. The correlation is based on the concept of cultural mediation applied to typographic forms. As a showing, the special notebook “Planeta Seca” (2012), published by the Ceará newspaper O Povo, is analyzed. This research of a qualitative and exploratory nature, enabled by the hermeneutic-dialectic method applied to the reading of the graphic design, reveals that the document and its typography are mediating dense significations around its theme, acting as a complex information, documentary and communicating code.
