We present the translation in Portuguese of the tale Costantino Fortunato, or also, Constantino Afortunado, by the Italian writer Giovan Francesco Straparola (1480-1557). This is the first known literary version of Puss on Boots, made famous, centuries later, by the version published by the French writer Charles Perrault. This annotated translation is introduced by explanations, commented on notes and is accompanied by two parts that are linked to this tale in the original work: the introduction of the eleventh night and the final riddle.
